Istikharah is the Prophetic way of asking Allah to guide you towards what is best when you are considering a permissible decision. It combines prayer, du‘a, trust in Allah and responsible decision-making. It is not a fortune-telling method and it does not depend on seeing a dream.
What is Istikharah?
The word comes from seeking what is good. In the hadith, Jabir رضي الله عنه explains that the Prophet ﷺ taught the Companions Istikharah for their matters with great care. The method is simple: pray two rak‘ahs of voluntary prayer, then make the supplication and mention the matter you are considering.
Istikharah is for a genuine choice where you want Allah to guide you to what is better. It is not used to decide whether you should perform an established obligation or whether something clearly prohibited becomes acceptable.
The Arabic du‘a of Istikharah
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَقْدِرُ وَلَا أَقْدِرُ، وَتَعْلَمُ وَلَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ
Transliteration
Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ‘ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlikal-‘azim. Fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru, wa ta‘lamu wa la a‘lamu, wa anta ‘allamul-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta‘lamu anna hadhal-amra khayrun li fi dini wa ma‘ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta‘lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma‘ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bihi.
Meaning in plain English
You are asking Allah by His perfect knowledge and power to facilitate the matter if it is good for your religion, life and outcome, to bless you in it, and to turn it away from you if it is harmful. You also ask Allah to decree what is good wherever it may be and make you content with it.
How to pray Istikharah step by step
Do you need to see a dream after Istikharah?
No dream is required in the hadith. The narration teaches prayer and du‘a, not a rule that guidance must arrive as a dream, colour, feeling or unusual sign. If a dream happens, that does not automatically make it a decisive instruction either.
A healthier way to understand Istikharah is that you have asked Allah, who knows what you do not know, to facilitate what is good and turn away what is harmful. You can then continue with the decision using the information and circumstances available to you.
Istikharah does not replace thinking or consultation
The Prophetic du‘a itself is an admission that Allah knows and we do not. That humility should make us more responsible, not less. Before making a major decision, gather facts, check your assumptions and consult people with relevant knowledge or experience. Istikharah then places the outcome with Allah rather than pretending that your analysis can remove every uncertainty.
Research what you can, ask good people, pray Istikharah, make the best decision available to you, then trust Allah with what you could never know in advance.
What should you mention in the du‘a?
The hadith states that the person should name the need or matter. You do not need a complicated formula. Know what decision you are bringing before Allah and mention it clearly.
What happens after Istikharah?
Sometimes one option becomes easier, sometimes new information changes the situation, and sometimes you still have to make a difficult judgement without feeling completely certain. Istikharah is not a promise that every decision will suddenly feel obvious. Its purpose is to ask Allah to direct you to the good and protect you from what is harmful.
If the matter remains open, you can continue to seek advice and make du‘a. Do not become trapped repeating Istikharah because you are waiting for an emotional feeling strong enough to remove all uncertainty.
Common questions
Can I pray Istikharah for marriage?
Marriage is one of the common permissible decisions for which a person may seek Allah’s guidance. Istikharah should sit alongside proper questions, compatibility checks, family discussion and sensible due diligence.
Can I use Istikharah for a job or business decision?
Yes, where the options themselves are permissible. Research the role or opportunity carefully and use Istikharah alongside that practical work.
What if I do not feel anything afterwards?
A special feeling is not required by the hadith. You asked Allah for guidance, so continue responsibly and trust Him with the outcome.
Can someone else perform Istikharah for me?
The hadith teaches the person considering the matter to pray and make the supplication. Other people can make general du‘a for you, but do not outsource your own Istikharah as though another person can receive the decision for you.
