SURAH AL-JINN · 72:18

وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدًۭا

The places of worship belong to Allah, so do not call upon anyone alongside Allah.

WHAT THIS VERSE IS SAYING

Start with the context.

This short verse states one of the clearest foundations of Islamic worship: it belongs to Allah alone. The masjid is not simply a community space. Its central purpose is sincere worship of the Creator.

Read it in context

Classical tafsir explains “masajid” primarily as mosques or places of worship, while some early explanations also connect the word to prostration itself. In either reading, the central message is the same: worship and invocation are for Allah alone.

The surrounding passage in Surah Al-Jinn speaks about revelation, the jinn hearing the Qur’an and the Messenger calling people to Allah. Verse 18 anchors that message in tawhid and exclusive worship.
