When people become frightened about sihr or jinn in the home, they are often given long lists of rituals: salt in corners, burning substances, spraying mixtures, playing recordings on repeat, drawing symbols or searching the property for hidden objects.
The authentic Sunnah gives us a much clearer foundation.
The strongest starting point: make the home a place of worship
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said not to make houses like graveyards, and that Shaytan flees from a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited. See Sahih Muslim 780.
This immediately shifts the focus. A protected home is not built around fear. It is built around salah, Qur’an, remembrance of Allah and ordinary Muslim life.
Recite Surah al-Baqarah in the home
The hadith says Surah al-Baqarah is recited in the house. It does not require a particular paid reciter, a particular day, or a dramatic “cleansing session”.
If you are able, recite it yourself or as a family over time. Do not turn it into a burden that makes people avoid Qur’an.
Can I just play a recording of Surah al-Baqarah?
Listening to Qur’an is good, but the hadith specifically speaks about recitation. A recording can be beneficial to listen to, but it should not replace your own recitation and worship.
There is also no sound basis for claiming that a speaker playing Surah al-Baqarah on a loop automatically performs ruqyah on an empty house.
Protect the people in the home
Home protection begins with the people who live there.
Morning and evening
Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and al-Nas three times in the morning and evening, as taught in Sunan Abi Dawud 5082.
Before sleep
Recite the three surahs into your cupped hands, lightly blow and wipe over the body three times. See Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.
Ayat al-Kursi
Recite Ayat al-Kursi before sleep. Sahih al-Bukhari 5010 records the protection associated with this practice until morning.
The last two verses of al-Baqarah
Sahih al-Bukhari 5009 states that whoever recites the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice for him.
A protection du‘a when staying somewhere
The Prophet ﷺ taught:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
A‘udhu bi kalimatillahi al-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.
This seeks refuge in Allah’s perfect words from the evil of what He created. See Sahih Muslim 2708a.
What about salt in the corners?
Do not present salt rituals as Sunnah ruqyah. There is no authentic prophetic instruction that Muslims must put salt in four corners of the home to repel jinn.
The same principle applies to invented “cleansing” rituals involving special numbers, coloured water, smoke, eggs, hidden papers or unknown substances.
What about burning incense?
Using a pleasant fragrance is one thing. Claiming that a specific incense spiritually expels jinn as a Sunnah treatment is another.
If someone presents a practice as religious treatment, ask for the evidence.
Should I search the house for sihr?
Do not dismantle your home because someone had a dream or a raqi said “it is buried near the entrance”.
Sihr is real, and the hadith about magic affecting the Prophet ﷺ includes a real physical object that Allah informed him about. See Sahih al-Bukhari 5763.
But that does not mean every home contains a hidden bundle or that a practitioner can locate one through guesswork.
If you genuinely find an unusual object connected with suspected occult practice, avoid turning its disposal into another invented ritual. Remove the harmful object safely and seek reliable scholarly guidance if needed.
Do not let fear destroy the atmosphere of the home
A home can become psychologically exhausting when every sound is interpreted as jinn:
- pipes making noise;
- children waking at night;
- lights flickering;
- doors moving;
- sleep paralysis;
- arguments;
- feeling uncomfortable in one room.
Check ordinary explanations too. Repair the electrics. Look at sleep. Address family conflict. Seek medical help when needed.
Ruqyah in the home should strengthen normal worship
A useful home routine could be:
- Pray the obligatory prayers on time.
- Keep voluntary prayer in the home where appropriate.
- Recite Qur’an regularly.
- Read Surah al-Baqarah in the house.
- Keep morning and evening adhkar.
- Use bedtime protections.
- Teach children simple protective du‘as without frightening them.
- Remove obvious haram practices from the home.
- Ask Allah for protection and tranquillity.
What not to do
- Do not pay someone to “scan” every room for jinn.
- Do not accuse neighbours or relatives of burying sihr without evidence.
- Do not use talismans or unknown symbols.
- Do not keep mysterious papers given by a practitioner.
- Do not turn Qur’an into background noise while abandoning salah.
- Do not frighten children with constant jinn talk.
Frequently asked questions
How often should Surah al-Baqarah be recited in the house?
The authentic hadith establishes its virtue but does not give a fixed weekly timetable. Do not invent a mandatory schedule.
Can I perform ruqyah in every room?
You can recite Qur’an and make du‘a anywhere appropriate in the home. There is no need for a room-by-room ritual unless you simply choose to recite there.
Do I need ruqyah water to spray the house?
The core protections above do not require spraying special water around the property.
What if I feel afraid in my own home?
Use the authentic protections, but also look at anxiety, sleep, safety and environmental causes. If fear is becoming severe or obsessive, seek appropriate help.
