SURAH TAHA · 20:119

There you will not suffer thirst, nor be exposed to the heat of the sun.

WHAT THIS VERSE IS SAYING

Start with the context.

This verse is part of Allah’s warning and reassurance to Adam before the temptation of Shaytan. It describes the security and ease Adam enjoyed in Paradise before his fall to earthly life.

Read it in context

Verses 118–119 belong together. Adam is told that in Paradise he will not go hungry, be unclothed, become thirsty or suffer from the sun’s heat. Classical tafsir explains these as basic hardships from which he was completely protected there.

The warning comes immediately before Shaytan whispers to Adam in verse 120. The passage contrasts the effortless provision of Paradise with the hardship that follows disobedience and departure from it.

We often think of blessing only as gaining more. This passage reminds us that protection from hardship is itself a major form of provision. Gratitude includes noticing what Allah has spared us from as well as what He has given us.
